JUST AS THE CAUSE OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS IS PHILOSOPHICAL, So is the cure. The cure is the restoration of the principles that made America great in the first place: “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”; each individual’s moral right to his own life; and each individual’s moral right to the product of his own labor, which includes the right to earn great wealth if you produce a great deal and the right to give away as much of your wealth as you like to whomever you want for whatever reason.

As a moral code, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” demands personal responsibility because there is no free lunch. It also demands and rewards rationality, self-discipline, and justice. It is consistent ...
