Chapter 12. Additional note on the theory of Business Unit Strategy

The view I have presented above is a practical distillation of what I consider useful for practising executives trying to develop a strategy for their own business. MBA students and others who are interested in the theory of strategy should be aware of the following controversies that I have ignored or side-stepped in the text above:

  • the resource-based view of strategy versus the positioning view

  • the boundaries between Business Unit Strategy and Corporate Strategy

  • planned strategy versus emergent, crafted and evolutionary strategy

  • strategy as art versus science.

In this note I outline the main issues and protagonists, before giving my verdict on the controversy.
