One day in 2008, my wife, Rosemary, was walking through a Scripps facility with our family's therapy dog, Libby, when she came across a young woman being pushed in a wheelchair. The patient's eyes flicked from Rosemary to Libby, and she asked to stop and began to cry. Shocked, Rosemary asked what was wrong.

“I'm so sorry,” the patient said. “It's just that . . . when I saw your dog, it hit me what happened to our family this week. Our dog just died, and I almost did too. My husband almost lost his wife, his unborn child, and his dog within weeks of each other.”
