Overview

The subject of this Reader – fundraising – is both commonplace and contested, essential and yet often overlooked, historically typical yet continuously misunderstood. Given these somewhat confusing characterisations, we begin by exploring some fundamental questions: What is fundraising? What are its historical roots? And in what ways – and why – is it frequently misunderstood? It is a reflection of the complexity, and mostly understudied nature, of our subject that we need to start with an entire section devoted to these basic, yet revealing, questions.
