Charities and the fundraising that supports their activities have been established for over 2,000 years. Both originally drew on Jewish and Graeco-Roman traditions. Fundraising throughout its history has depended on leaders, volunteers and a range of methods segmented in relation to target supporters. The principles have remained constant although activity has been affected by circumstances and by the means available – pulpit or television.
