EMBEDDING SUSTAINABILITY INTO THE VALUE CHAIN

In Chapter Five we explored the governance structures Sustain­able Market Leaders are installing to oversee their sustainability efforts. In this chapter, we look at the various adjustments Sustainable Market Leaders are making to integrate sustainability into their core processes.

All companies have the basic processes and functions in place to embrace sustainability. Sustainability does not require expensive and disruptive change programs based on new processes. As we will see, these adjustments seem wholly organic extensions of the processes’ spirits, if not tasks and activities; none needs to come down on the organization like a sweeping edict from above.
