Shift 11: Appraising to Developing Performance
How do we make employees more accountable for their performance? This is a perennial challenge that’s not helped by an archaic performance management system.
A unique relationship develops between the manager and employee who regularly enter dialog, as they develop a deeper level of trust. This carries over to task-based discussions in the team. They develop a richer understanding of the uniqueness of each person’s point-of-view and experience. Larger understandings emerge by holding one’s own perspective “gently.” Part of the vision of dialog is the assumption of a “larger pool of meaning” that’s accessible to the team. (Senge 2006)1
