Today’s employees are changing—and changing fast. Surprisingly to most managers, over 50 percent of U.S. workers are dissatisfied with their jobs. Study after study shows a decline in satisfaction and engagement, which has been accelerated by the global financial crisis of 2008. Whether it’s wages (only 35 percent satisfied), managerial quality (only 54 percent satisfied), or stress level (only 25 percent satisfied), a survey by Right Management, the talent and management subdivision of the staffing behemoth ManpowerGroup, shows an alarming level of worker disaffection. This trend has been accelerating since the late 1980s, with most indices declining at least 20 percent more since then.
