The Hope for a Better World

Myths attempt to teach something about the world. Parables often try to do the same. Parables take a story to make listeners or readers think about how its teachings could inform their own behaviors. The Christian parable of the Good Samaritan, for example, tells the story of how an individual helps a traveler who was robbed, beaten, and seemingly left to die on the side of the road. The helper did this despite being considered an outsider, as part of a marginalized group who might not likely have gotten along with the victim had they met under normal circumstances, after several other individuals of a higher status passed by the victim.
