In 1958, the popular TV show To Tell the Truth had as its featured guest the “famed sales authority Elmer Wheeler.” Interestingly, the panel of celebrities, which consisted of Polly Bergen, Jackie Cooper, Kitty Carlisle, and Hy Gardner (“celebrities” who are nearly as lost to memory as poor Elmer), tried to guess which of three men was the real Elmer Wheeler.
Perhaps if they had listened carefully to the way he spoke, they would have gotten a clue or two. Wheeler was a rough but effective public speaker who had made LP albums teaching salespeople how to sell more effectively.
