Loss of income because of a longterm disability is among the most devastating financial losses a person can face. This chapter focuses on disability income benefits, both short-term and longterm. It begins with an overview of disability risk and an explanation of how disability income protection evolved in the United States, both in the public sector and in employment-based programs. Plan design issues associated with sick leave, short-term disability, longterm disability, self-insurance options, integration of plans, and integration with public programs are discussed.
