CHAPTER 8Positive Relationships

As a group of factors, relationships consistently rank at the top of almost every country in the 100‐plus in which we collect data. It is yet another beautiful reminder that human beings are social animals.

It is also important not to let the introvert‐extrovert debate distract us here. If someone doesn't want to go to the all‐hands company party because they don't like big group gatherings, that doesn't mean they don't care about relationships or don't want to have positive relationships with their colleagues. It just means they want to interact in a different way. It is a leader's job to find out the best way to do this.

Some leaders found success in their careers because they thrive in large social settings, but that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. How you nurture positive relationships among your team will be key to creating conditions where the underlying happiness of your employees can improve.

It is also worth pointing out that relationships need to be authentic; otherwise they will break down at the first sign of trouble. In any relationship, if you only ever discuss the good stuff and avoid the tough conversations, then that relationship will struggle once you hit a bit of choppy water.
