USING FILTERS

There are five basic reasons for using filters: to obtain correct color rendition in color photography or correct gray tones in black and white work, to enhance color images or change gray tones in black and white, to create special effects and moods, to reduce the amount of light reaching the film, and to protect the lens.

Filters as Lens Protection

Lenses are expensive components in any camera system, and they are easily damaged and usually expensive to repair. It is a good practice to protect the front element with an optically plain piece of glass such as an ultraviolet (UV) or haze filter.
