Understanding Light and Filters
There are five basic reasons for using filters: to obtain correct color rendition in color photography or correct gray tones in black and white work, to enhance color images or change gray tones in black and white, to create special effects and moods, to reduce the amount of light reaching the film, and to protect the lens.

Lenses are expensive components in any camera system, and they are easily damaged and usually expensive to repair.
