He/She is Married or Engaged

Married

This is a classic barrier to love. It has been done many, many times but still works as an opposing force. It is even more daunting if there are children in the picture. The challenge with this is keeping your protagonist sympathetic as we watch them fall in love outside their marriage and possibly betray their wife or husband sexually as well. Not the greatest thing for a person to do. So how do you keep us rooting for, caring about, fearing for, worrying for, or all of the above?

The key is motivation. You need to give your protagonist a strong reason to fall in love outside the marriage. Motivate this transgression. Make us understand the driving force and sympathize with that.
