Introduction

It goes without saying that CEOs have become key figures in society. They are hailed as strategic problem-solvers for whom no social or technical challenge is too complex, and are perceived as visionaries who guide us to a better future. In the academic world, some heads of business schools have started calling themselves ‘CEOs’ to attract some of the prestige of business CEOs (Bickerstaffe, 2006). Others have fiercely criticised this ‘romancing’ of the CEO, because in our society:
