Hakeem the Dream

AND HE WAS, IN FACT, a dream to work with. An uncommonly gracious man, he well earned the nickname The Dream by leading the Houston Rockets to two NBA championships in the ’90s while winning all sorts of MVP-type awards. Sports Illustrated asked me to shoot him as a cover story for their popular “Where are they now?” yearly issue.

While Hakeem was a dream, I had to shoot him in Houston, a city rarely referred to as “dreamlike.” It is a city of strip malls and hard, flat light. The sun comes up fast, burns through all the crap in the air, and hits your pixels like a thrown punch. Pretty, it ain’t.
