6 From the Top Down: Layer 1–Populating the OFDM Waveform with Information
Layer 1 sits at the bottom of the IBOC protocol stack. On the transmission side, all information must go through this layer to get on the air. Program audio, data services, station information, and system control information are funneled through this layer. On the reception side, the Layer 1 protocol informs the design of the receiver. This is the layer in which the electrical characteristics of the received signal are converted to matrices and vectors of structured information. Layer 1 lets the receiver make sense out of the IBOC radio spectrum.
