CHAPTER 19The Role of the CEO
What is the role of the CEO? I am sure this can be described in many ways. My simplest definition of a CEO’s function would be to lead the process of development and make recommendations to the board regarding:
• The vision and objectives (the ambition level)
• The strategies (how to get there)
• The value system, the organization, governance structure, and policies (the framework)
• Budgets (allocation of resources)
Steps to Successful Leadership
With those decisions in place, the responsibility is then to recruit the people to do it and provide the leadership to make it happen. Some of this has already been discussed in more detail, but let me give some additional reflections on some of these things.
