MPLS and IP Switching

Abstract

In this chapter, you will learn how various factors have led to the development of IP switching techniques that go beyond simple next-hop routing. We’ll also compare and contrast frame relay and ATM switched networks to illustrate the concepts behind IP switching.

You will learn how MPLS is used to create LSPs to switch (instead of route) IP packets through a routing domain. We’ll see how MPLS can form the basis for a type of VPN service offering.
