2 Importing to Your Catalog

In Chapter 1, we mentioned that Lightroom is a database-driven application. The beauty of databases is that as the files are referenced, they can still be edited, even when offline. Previous version of Lightroom allowed all the metadata to be edited offline; but Smart Previews were added to Lightroom 5, which means you can now change Develop settings with the files offline. However, before this can happen, the files need to be ingested into the catalog via Import. Let’s talk a little bit about catalogs and then delve into Import.
