Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891–1956) was born in Mhow, into an untouchable Mahar family. As his father and grandfather were in the British Army, the children of the family received good education: the government of the day required all Army personnel and their families to be educated. In the armies raised by the British both before and after 1857, the Mahars constituted a substantial percentage. These development opportunities in education and employment led to changes that came into conflict with traditional social relations.
