OVERVIEW

According to The World Intellectual Property Organization, “Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce.” When a designer creates a novel work, there are many issues to navigate relative to protecting and capitalizing from intellectual property rights. Creative works and inventions can be protected with patents, trademarks, or copyrights, and this chapter describes some of the options and processes for establishing property rights.
