Foundations: Their Societal Role
The role of foundations in society is, of necessity, many roles. Considering that there were more than fifty-eight thousand foundations in existence as of 1999, sheer numbers dictate that there will be many varieties of form and function. Many foundations, especially smaller ones, limit their funding to their own local areas. Some, especially the larger foundations, support national or global projects (or both). Many foundations fund a wide range of organizations, but a few, especially operating foundations, drastically limit the number of entities they support. Making any sort of meaningful generalized statement about the roles that foundations play in society is all but impossible.
