17   Solace in Interesting Times

I have stood next to trees as lightning shattered them, walked into the wash to experience the flash flood storming toward my face, entered the cave and seen the lion’s eyes glow in my beam of light, gone to the snakes, beaten myself all but to death in waterless desert marches. Gone to the mountains also. Ridden out storms on the lip of cliffs, let the riptide take me out to sea, sat company with the curious coyote that came to my camp, felt bats flutter along my flesh and explore my hide, watched a centipede amble across my bare chest. I cannot remember most of it but I can taste all of it and it is never enough.
