The Internet of Things (IoT) holds a lot of promise for the automobile industry, and for drivers everywhere. Today’s so-called connected cars offer streaming music via the Internet, traffic and weather reports, and even global positioning system (GPS) mapping and directions. But what about a smart car that monitors traffic conditions and automatically reroutes you when necessary? Or one that diagnoses—and even repairs—its own problems if they develop? Or the ultimate smart automobile, a self-driving car that’s so advanced you don’t have to do much of anything to get from point A to point B other than open the door and strap yourself in.
