In many fields, subjective or quantitative judgments compare the contributions of multiple individuals or organizations and single out the highest ranked. In sports, the Most Valuable Player award is given to the individual who is deemed to have made the greatest contributions. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences uses the same term for annual awards in instrumental categories. Microsoft has a much lauded Most Valuable Professional award that is given for contributions in technical fields.
