The nonprofit sector in the United States is not well understood by the average nonprofit leader or employee, much less by the average citizen. My task in this chapter is to provide a foundation for understanding the nature of the sector in America today, explain the context within which the sector operates, and offer some observations about how the sector may continue to evolve and change in the coming five to ten years.
