One night Sammy was awakened by a dream—the same one he’d had the night before. He’d dreamt that his father, Sam, had returned and asked him what he was doing. But when Sammy tried to speak, no words came out, no matter how much he struggled. This only frustrated his father, so he talked louder and louder until he was screaming at Sammy. Still Sammy had no voice. The dream became so animated that when Sammy awoke, he had soaked his pillow with sweat and had to turn it over before he lay his head back down. As weeks passed, despite an occasional upsetting dream or two, Sammy settled into the job.
