Writing is a fundamental part of my life and has been as long as I can remember. I owe a debt of gratitude to some excellent English teachers along the way who awakened in me an appreciation for clear writing. I was lucky in high school to have two teachers in particular who were tough but inspiring: Percy Totheroh and Joyce King. Mrs. King, who had been a magazine editor and who put in hours correcting and editing everything we wrote, taught me more about effective writing than anyone or anything else.
