Adam got up early Wednesday morning and was out on the porch in time to see the sunlight boil up from the hills to the east and hear the birds chattering their wake-up calls in the trees near the back of the property. Duncan and Cole had scraped off enough topsoil to expose a table-sized expanse of the buried rock; to Adam, it made the subterranean behemoth feel even larger.
Adam propped up the back of the chaise lounge and unfurled the magazine he had brought with him. He barely realized he was staring numbly at the pages, his mind adrift with his own mental journaling of the last few days.
