How to deliver difficult or challenging messages

Presenting difficult or challenging messages in a group environment requires you to plan even more carefully than usual to ensure that your message is heard in the way you want it to be. When emotions are high it is easy for your audience to read things into your words and make their own interpretations of your message.

Examples of difficult messages or conversations might include:

  • introducing new working procedures;
  • selling a change in strategy that might have a negative impact on your audience;
  • announcing and discussing business results that are not as good as were predicted;
  • announcing new business/departmental targets or goals.
