7.1 Forget about being liked
Most newly appointed managers, and many experienced ones, demonstrate a tendency through their deeds and words to court popularity. Most people want to be liked.
It can be particularly noticeable when someone from within a team is promoted to become the team's new boss. Up to that moment, that person's relationship with their teammates has been on the basis of equality. Suddenly, the working relationship changes and both sides need to think about, and develop, a new relationship, where the boss perhaps doesn't get to keep the same confidential or even conspiratorial interaction they enjoyed before. The new boss will need to distance himself or herself from the team.
