12.1 Don't buy in team building events – do them yourself

I really believe, and have always practised, the management principle that if you have smart people (or at least potentially smart people), it is absolutely essential to create the right environment for them to be able to excel. In an attempt to build the right environment you may consider buying in a team building event or exercise. Please think again.

I've been on many indoor and outdoor team building exercises and greatly enjoyed the vast majority. Most of my colleagues found them to be equally enjoyable. We had a lot of fun, constructing catapults, building river rafts and attempting military style assault courses outside.
