Edmund Burke (1729–97) was a statesman, author, orator, political theorist and philosopher who, after moving to London, served as a Member of Parliament for many years. He lived through turbulent times and saw both the American and French Revolutions rock the centuries-old certainties and continuing effects of the agrarian revolution change the social fabric of Britain. With the industrial revolution on the horizon, it’s hardly surprising that he said:

You can never plan the future by the past.
