2.12. Opening Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets as SAS Data Sets

When you open a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as a SAS data set, SAS Enterprise Guide copies the data in the spreadsheet into a SAS data set. As a result:

  • You can run tasks using the data (and the tasks will run more quickly because it’s faster to read a SAS data set than a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet).

  • You can edit the data, but any changes you make will not be applied to the original Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

  • If the original spreadsheet changes, SAS Enterprise Guide will not automatically read the updated version. To get the updated version, you must import the spreadsheet again.
