Nathan had been a successful individual contributor and was promoted to leadership. Although he doubted his skills, he was leading people doing work like he had done, so he felt he was doing fairly well. Senior leaders thought he was doing better than that—they promoted him again. Now he finds himself leading people in three countries doing work he’s never done. He lies awake at night wondering if he’s really up to the challenge, and he is sure he’ll be exposed as unqualified for his job. He wonders if he can ever succeed in this situation.
