Hard work wins

Nigel Roberts was captain of Great Britain’s over-35 ice hockey team. He continues, since retiring from the sport, to coach at his club, Hull Kingston Cobras. He has had a great chance to see how youngsters develop over time. What he has noticed is that those who came to the sport at the age of 12 or 13 and do well right away are often not those who succeed aged 18, 19 or 20. Says Nigel:

‘What seems to happen is that those people who attribute their success to talent assume that the success curve will continue to grow for them because they are talented. The youngsters who succeed later often do so because they have had to work hard to become good. They understand how to overcome failure and disappointment ...
