10. Back Up Your Data
I wanted to title this chapter “MAKE BACKUPS!!”, but didn’t want to give my copyeditor a heart attack. Even without the all-caps and double exclamation points, I can’t overstress the importance of setting up a good backup system.
If you think backups are merely a fine idea, and maybe you plan to copy a file or two to a CD once in awhile, let me propose this situation: You’re sitting in front of your Mac, looking through your digital photos of when your kids were babies, or when you took that once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Then you start to hear a clicking noise, followed by your computer abruptly shutting down. When you restart it, the clicking noise has returned but nothing else.
