Now we come to the last part of our review—the roles that must be in place to support teams.

ROLE FUNCTION
SPONSOR

The sponsor is the person who is responsible for starting or “chartering” the team. The sponsor removes roadblocks, provides resources, and gets help for the team when needed.

The sponsor is not a member of the team and only occasionally attends meetings. However, the sponsor does intervene if he or she believes that the team has gotten off track or is working on goals that are inconsistent with its original mission. The team sponsor does not micro-manage, steer the team toward a particular outcome, or dictate solutions to the team.
