SEXUAL HARASSMENT

All employees must be provided with a work environment free from unwanted or unwelcome conduct. Harassment can be male to female, female to male, or same sex (e.g. male to male). Generally, there are two types of harassment: quid pro quo and hostile environment. Quid pro quo harassment occurs when a person wants “something for something,” such as sex for a promotion. A hostile environment is created when the harassing activity (e.g., continually asking for a date) creates an intolerable working environment. (See Preventing Sexual Harassment, HRD Press, 1999.)
