Writing is thinking on a piece of paper. But you don’t have to pen words or pound a keyboard to write. Much of the writing process can be done in your head. Selecting, the first and very important step in the writing process, often takes place in the mind. Of course, sometimes (especially at work) you cannot “select” your topic: The boss tells you to write a memo or you have a report that’s due, or your own need dictates a specific topic (for example, you might need to ask for more staff). Any one of a hundred reasons can prevent you from selecting your own topic. But thousands of times you can and do select your topic.
