Response A:

“You do a good job in your interviews. Don’t forget to sell the company.”

This feedback is overly general and does not give any specific suggestions for improvement. Although it mixes positive and negative feedback, Dominic doesn’t learn the details of what he did well nor how he could specifically change his behavior to improve his performance.

Response B:

“Several of the candidates you have interviewed didn’t seem convinced about the value they would gain from working for us. What might you do differently to describe the benefits of the company and better enlist good people?”

This response gives specific feedback about the problem and opens the door for turning the problem into a learning opportunity.
