7.3.1 Limiting Critera
The ability of a ship to carry out its intended mission efficiently may be curtailed by a number of factors. There is a correspondingly wide range of limiting seakeeping criteria. The limit may be set by the ability of the ship itself, or its systems, to operate effectively and safely, or by the comfort or proficiency of passengers or crew. In so far as equipment or personnel performance is degraded when motions (e.g. vertical acceleration) exceed a certain level, careful siting of the related activity within the ship in an area of lesser motions may extend the range of sea conditions in which operation is acceptable.
