Sufficient stability is most important for operating a ship safely. Stability of a ship at sea depends very much on the actions taken by the master. The safe operation of the ship needs a thorough knowledge of the current loading status of the ship, of the ship behaviour in extreme seas, and of the best ways to cope with dangerous situations, Kaps and Kastner (1984). There may even be rare situations, where relying on the minimum required stability during ship operations is not sufficient at all.
