6.1. CHARACTERISTICS OF A TEAM PLAYER

A team player is cooperative, interested in helping others, and able to subdue his own ego for the good of the organization. He is not overly introspective or selfish. He understands the value of sharing and places greater importance on the good of the group and the benefit of others than on his own selfish interests. He recognizes the impact he can have on others by exemplifying an accepting and encouraging attitude. He looks for ways to communicate his needs with teammates and finds similar ways in which he can support them in their efforts. He is honest but respectful of the sensitivities of others and looks for ways of communicating in a supportive, nonthreatening, nonnegative way. He is able to encourage his teammates to persevere during defeat, and is confident enough to help push them to move beyond their comfort zones.

A team player makes a conscious effort to abide by shared team values and those things that represent good character. He recognizes that his thoughts and actions impact not only his own behavior but also the behavior, responses, and contributions of those on his team. Therefore, he functions in a committed way; he is committed to his objectives as well as to the good of the team and to adhering to a sound set of moral values.
