Introduction

Mentoring programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are a third area of interest and investment. Student-alumni/industry and first-generation mentoring programs are the other two areas of interest (see Chapters 12 and 13). STEM mentoring programs are designed to encourage people to go into areas of great market and societal need.

There continue to be disparities in who participates in STEM careers (National Science Foundation 2017), and mentoring programs are designed to reduce these disparities.
