The MIDI 1.0 Spec
The Musical Instrument Digital Interface is a digital communications protocol. That’s to say, it is a standardized control language and hardware specification that makes it possible for electronic instruments, processors, controllers and other device types to communicate performance and control-related data in real time. Founded in 1983 by a small group from various manufacturers, the MIDI 1.0 protocol has been instrumental in making it possible for all almost all electronic instruments to seamlessly communicate over a connected network. As the MIDI 1.0 spec is fully implemented within the 2.0 spec, it’s important that it be covered in its entirety.
