What Do You Want Out of Life?

Unless you know what you want to achieve, you'll never get it. Excuse me for being blunt, but the biggest reason for not living life to its fullest is not because you're unlucky, disadvantaged, bad at math, or whatever. It's because you've never sat down and laid out your goals and ambitions.

Imagine going into a travel agent and saying: “Send me somewhere.” The agent would say, “Where do you want to visit?” You would say, “A really nice place, you know, a place I can be happy. A place I can have an important job, a beautiful wife, some nice kids. A really great place.” Could a travel agent help you? Of course not. People can't help you until you tell them exactly what you want.

What Do You Want?

I suppose you want lots of money and a good life? That is not a specific goal. People say this all the time and then spend their money on the lottery. You have to be far more specific than this. Even if you believe in yourself, success is impossible without specific, well-defined goals.

I've asked hundreds of people: “What do you want out of life?” and very rarely do I ever get an answer. Even when I do, it's something like “I want to be happy.” Most people just don't know what they want, and that's why they don't get anywhere.

Before you read this book, I would be amazed if you had already written a goals sheet. I would guess that 99 percent of the population don't have well-defined or written goals.
