ESTABLISHING AND HONORING AN EXPLICIT STRUCTURE FOR THE COACHING RELATIONSHIP
Being clear about the goals of coaching and about how to work together is the first step in establishing the partnership between coach and client. These understandings may change later, by agreement of both people involved.
Some coaches feel comfortable simply discussing the details of this partnership with the client until both are clear about them and feel no need to put them down on paper. Others prefer to spell them out in a letter of understanding or formal contract. If a third party is involved, certain parts of the agreement may be dictated by that party (by company policy, for example, or the client intake protocol of a social services agency).
