Sea of Images

The world today is swamped with an ocean of images—discrete but connected seas of photographic activity: fine art, documentary, commercial, editorial, illustrative, amateur, and social media. The sheer number of pictures that compete for our attention is overwhelming. What percentage of images are a feast for the eyes and mind, and which represent a diet of immediate gratification without much nutritional value? In the face of this veritable onslaught of daily images, several questions need to be addressed by photographers and society alike. What is the responsibility of photographers to their audience, and what societal norms might evolve to ensure moral, ethical, and responsible usages of images?
